The Stinking Rose San Francisco – Heaven for Garlic Lovers
If you love garlic, this The Stinking Rose San Francisco is basically heaven.
If you don’t… you’ve been warned.
During our trip to San Francisco, we had to have lunch at Matt’s can’t-miss spot in the city.
We actually arrived at The Stinking Rose using a Waymo driverless taxi, which somehow made the experience feel even more uniquely San Francisco. If you’ve never ridden in a fully autonomous car before, you can read about our full Waymo experience here.
Known as the famous “garlic restaurant” in San Francisco, this spot fully commits to the theme — and we mean fully. From the appetizers to the entrees (and even dessert), garlic is worked into almost everything on the menu.
It’s over-the-top, memorable, and, honestly, one of the most unique dining experiences we’ve have to return to again and again.
🧄 What Makes The Stinking Rose Unique?
The entire restaurant revolves around garlic.
Not just “a lot of garlic” — we’re talking roasted garlic, garlic sauces, garlic seasoning, garlic-infused oils, garlic decor, and even garlic ice cream.
The restaurant leans completely into the theme with quirky décor, garlic-themed jokes throughout the menu, and giant garlic bulb decorations that make the whole experience feel fun instead of overly serious.
It’s one of those places where the atmosphere is just as much a part of the experience as the food itself.
🏙️ Atmosphere & Location
Located near North Beach, The Stinking Rose fits perfectly into the energetic, tourist-friendly vibe of the neighborhood.
Inside, the restaurant feels warm, busy, and intentionally chaotic in the best way possible. It’s definitely a popular spot for visitors, so expect crowds during peak dinner hours.
The experience feels somewhere between an Italian restaurant and a themed attraction — which honestly works for a place like this.
🍽️ Appetizers
🥖 Starting with the Appetizers
We kicked things off with the restaurant’s famous Bagna Calda — which the menu hilariously describes as “garlic soaking in a hot tub.” An accurate description.
Served bubbling hot in an iron skillet, the roasted garlic comes swimming in olive oil, butter, and a hint of anchovy, alongside warm house-made bread for spreading. The garlic becomes soft, rich, and almost sweet after roasting, making it surprisingly mellow instead of overwhelmingly sharp.
The garlic spreads onto your bread like butter. (Saturday Night Live fans of the 80s would know to say “like buttah”).
One thing we loved about The Stinking Rose is that even beyond the famous garlic dishes, the appetizer menu has a lot of variety for sharing. Some of the other starters that stood out included:
• Bruschetta di Aglio with tomatoes, pesto, green onions, and Reggiano
• Italian Garlic Pot Stickers filled with sausage, ginger, and vegetables
• Burrata Prosciutto with crostini, arugula, parsley, garlic, and olive oil
• Crab & Smoked Salmon Crostini with avocado mash and sea salt
• Smoked Salmon & Avocado on wonton crisps with garlic soy ponzu
The menu definitely leans heavily into bold flavors, but there are enough different textures and ingredients that it never feels repetitive.
🍝 Our Pasta Dishes
For the main course, we obviously fully committed to the garlic theme.
I ordered the gnocchi with the Garlic Brie & Mushrooms sauce and added Dungeness crab — which ended up being incredibly rich, creamy, and savory without feeling too heavy. The gnocchi itself was soft and pillowy, while the brie-based sauce added a smooth, almost luxurious texture that paired surprisingly well with the crab.
The garlic flavor was definitely present, but balanced more by the creaminess and earthiness of the mushrooms than pure intensity.
Matt went with the short rib ravioli tossed in the Garlic Lovers Parmagiano Garlic Rose Relish Butter Sauce, which might be one of the most aggressively garlic-forward pasta dishes on the menu — in the best way possible.
The ravioli filling was rich and hearty, while the butter sauce coated everything with roasted garlic flavor and sharp Parmagiano notes. If you come to The Stinking Rose specifically wanting the full “garlic experience,” this is probably the kind of dish you order.
One thing we appreciated about the pasta menu overall is how customizable it is. You can mix different pasta types with different sauces and even add extras like shrimp, chicken, or Dungeness crab, which makes the experience feel a little more personal instead of just ordering preset dishes.
Some of the other pasta options that stood out included:
• Seafood Fettuccine with mussels, crab, shrimp, calamari, and garlic pomodoro sauce
• Lasagna Al Forno with slow-roasted pork and beef sugo
• Garlic Alfredo with Parmigiano Reggiano cheese sauce
• Tomato Alfredo with garlic rose relish
• Pt. Reyes Blue Cheese with crispy bacon and garlic
At this point in the meal, we were fully embracing the garlic overload… and honestly had zero regrets.

🍨 Dessert — The One Thing We Always Order
No matter how many times we’ve visited The Stinking Rose, there’s one thing we always end the meal with: the famous garlic ice cream.
At this point, it’s basically tradition.
The idea sounds ridiculous at first — vanilla ice cream infused with garlic and topped with chocolate sauce — but somehow it just works. The garlic flavor is subtle, slightly roasted, and almost buttery rather than sharp or savory.

Honestly, if you didn’t know it contained garlic, you might just think it had a uniquely rich vanilla flavor with a little extra warmth to it.
What makes it so memorable is how unexpected it is. You spend the entire meal surrounded by bold garlic flavors, then dessert somehow transforms that same ingredient into something sweet and comforting.
Every single time we come here, we say we might try another dessert…
…and every single time we end up ordering the garlic ice cream again.
That alone probably says everything you need to know.
The dessert menu also includes options like tiramisu, crème brûlée cheesecake, affogato, and lemon torte — but for us, The Stinking Rose just wouldn’t feel complete without the garlic ice cream.
I mean, just look at it:

💰 Is The Stinking Rose Expensive?
Pricing felt pretty standard for a sit-down restaurant in San Francisco, especially considering the location and how well-known it is.
You’re definitely paying a little for the experience and reputation, but if you enjoy themed restaurants or trying iconic local spots, it feels worth doing at least once.
👍 Final Verdict: Is The Stinking Rose Worth It?
Yes — especially if you love garlic or want a memorable restaurant experience in San Francisco.
It’s not subtle, refined, or trying to be trendy… but that’s exactly the point.
The Stinking Rose fully embraces being fun, excessive, and unapologetically garlic-heavy, which is what makes it stand out from so many other restaurants.
Even if you only visit once, it’s one of those places you’ll probably keep talking about afterward.
