Pier 39 Sea Lions: When to See Them & What to Expect

If you’ve only got a day or two or say, 30 Hours in San Francisco, can we recommend visiting the Pier 39 Sea Lions?

In this post we’ll get into the history of the Sea Lions at Pier 39, when to see them, and what to expect.

Pier 39 Sea Lions: One of San Francisco’s Most Unexpected Attractions

When most people think of San Francisco, they picture the Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, or Alcatraz. But one of the city’s most entertaining attractions is also one of its loudest.

The sea lions at Pier 39 have become one of San Francisco’s most iconic waterfront sights, drawing visitors from around the world who come to watch them bark, lounge, fight over dock space, and occasionally launch themselves dramatically into the water.

During our July 2025 visit to San Francisco, we made our way along the Embarcadero to Pier 39 to see them for ourselves.

And yes… you hear them before you see them.

Why Are There Sea Lions at Pier 39?

The sea lions first began appearing around Pier 39 after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Not long after the quake, small groups of California sea lions started gathering on the floating K-Docks at the marina.

Over time, more and more showed up.

Eventually, the marina embraced them as permanent residents, and today the docks are specially maintained for the sea lions while nearby viewing areas allow visitors to safely watch them up close.

The population changes throughout the year depending on migration and breeding patterns, so the number of sea lions you’ll see can vary dramatically by season.

Visiting the Sea Lions in Summer

We visited in July, which meant we didn’t see the massive shoulder-to-shoulder groups that often show up during peak months.

Instead, there were smaller groups spread across the docks, which honestly made it easier to watch individual sea lions interact.

Some barked constantly.
Some slept through the chaos.
Others aggressively defended what they apparently considered prime real estate.

Even without the huge crowds of sea lions, the stop was still absolutely worth it.

Best Time to See the Pier 39 Sea Lions

While sea lions can usually be seen year-round, the largest numbers tend to appear during:

  • Late winter
  • Spring
  • Early summer

Fall can sometimes be quieter, while summer numbers vary depending on migration activity.

Morning visits are often less crowded if you want a more relaxed experience.

What to Expect When Visiting the Pier 39 Sea Lions

If you’re planning a stop at the Pier 39 sea lions, there are a few things worth knowing before you go.

First… they are loud. The barking echoes across the waterfront, and depending on how many are around, it can sound almost nonstop. Honestly, it’s part of the experience and makes the area feel more alive the closer you get to the docks.

You should also expect crowds, especially on weekends and during the middle of the day. Pier 39 is one of San Francisco’s biggest tourist attractions, so between the sea lions, restaurants, shops, and waterfront views, it stays pretty busy. We visited during the summer and still found plenty of room to stop and watch them for a while.

The good news is that seeing the sea lions is completely free and very easy to access. The viewing areas are built right into Pier 39, making this one of the simplest stops to add to a San Francisco itinerary, whether you’re spending an entire day around the waterfront or just passing through while walking the Embarcadero.

And yes… there can be a smell, depending on the temperature and if you’re downwind. They’re wild animals living out in the open along the docks, so that comes with the territory.

More to Do Around Pier 39

One of the best parts about visiting the sea lions is that they’re located right in the middle of one of San Francisco’s busiest tourist areas.

Nearby you’ll find:

  • Waterfront walks along the Embarcadero
  • Shops and restaurants
  • Bay views
  • Street performers
  • Views of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge

Because of this, stopping at the sea lions works well whether you’re spending an entire day exploring the area or just squeezing in a quick visit during a short trip.

From here we took a Waymo Driverless Car to lunch at the restaurant for garlic lovers – The Stinking Rose.

Final Thoughts

The Pier 39 sea lions are one of those attractions that sound a little silly at first… until you actually see them.

They’re noisy, chaotic, and surprisingly entertaining.

Even during our quick 30-hour trip to San Francisco, this ended up being one of the most memorable stops along the waterfront.

If you’re already visiting Pier 39 or walking the Embarcadero, it’s an easy stop that’s absolutely worth a few minutes of your time.
